This product is the crystals which distilled and sublimated from the fresh branches and leaves of Cinnamomum Camphora(L.) Sieb.Appearance is white crystallized powder or flake-shape crystal. It smells fragrant and tastes pungent and cool. It is volatile and when burned, thick smoke appears with yellow flame. This product easily dissolves in alcohol, chloroform and ether, but almost not in water.

Original Plant: tall tree; bark is tawny with slot grain; leaf has fragrant of camphol, and is unilobular mutualist, keratinize, oval, 6-12 cm long, 2.5 -6 cm wide, no down in both sides, or tiny tender down in back side when young, basifugal three-out veins, swelling gland in the vein axil. Panicle axil-grow, 3.5-7 cm long; flower is greenish-white or a little yellow, about 1mm long; stone is fruit-globular with 6-8mm diameter; fruit is of tray-shape.

Picking and Processing: after cultivated for the second or the third year, collect the branches and leaves in Oct. to Nov., fresh branches & leaves are extracted coarse borneol by water vapour distillation, the refined natural borneol can be obtained.

Component: by elementary analisis, infrared spectrum, ultravio let spectra, mass spectrography analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, its essential component D-borneol is defermined as the structure, whose content is above 96%min, It also contains a little camphor, camphene, beta Pinene, alpha Pinene etc.

The examination of heavy metal and arsenate: since the product is volatile material, and both the direct utensil and the facilities used in the production process are made of stainless steel, the existing and remaining of the heavy metal and arsenate is quite impossible. after examining several batches of the product according to {CHINESE PHARMACOPEIA}(1995 edition), the heavy metal is all less than one ten-thousandth and there is scarcely spots in the arsenic spot, examination, so this product does not include the examination item of heavy metal and arsenate.

This product doesn't contain harmful isoborneol ingredient, so its medical effect is much better than synthetic borneol and natural L- borneol.
